The Irish Wolfhound Foundation - Foundations objectives

The Irish Wolfhound Foundation (Stichting de Ierse Wolfshond) was established by a group of Irish Wolfhound owners with the objective of the preservation and improvement of the Irish Wolfhound.

The reason is that the health of the Irish Wolfhound has received too little attention and our breed runs the risk of eventual extinction. It is our to goal to do everything in our power to prevent the uniqueness of our beloved breed from being lost forever.

You might ask how we plan to approach that goal?

  ·   By making the health of the IW our highest priority.
  ·   By making an inventory, with the help of scientists, of the scientific research that is deemed necessary to improve the health of our breed.
  ·   By endeavouring to motivate breeders to cooperate in those studies.
  ·   By keeping the genetic pool varied and the breeding basis as broad as possible, through importing fresh blood. By importing male dogs that are not related to our bloodlines.
  ·   By examining those male dogs for the presence of liver shunt, congestive cardiomyopathy (CCM) and hipdysplasia (HD)
  ·   By using these male dogs for a restricted number of matings, and then only when the results of above mentioned tests are negative.
  ·   By using these male dogs to only cover bitches that also have negative results in above mentioned tests.
  ·   By monitoring parent animals and progeny during their entire life and record health developments in a data bank.
  ·   By providing open and honest information and optimum guidance to potential puppy buyers and Irish Wolfhound owners.
  ·   By motivating Irish Wolfhound owners to cooperate in scientific studies that are important to the health of our breed.
  ·   By informing and advising breeders about faults that are or are not hereditary.
  ·   By registration of pure bred Irish Wolfhounds.

The ambitious list above comes with a considerable price tag.
Without your support, help and commitment as an Irish Wolfhound lover we will not be able to fund this budget.
This is why we now appeal to you for financial support of the Foundation by means of a yearly donation. The financial capacity of any one person is limited, but the combined financial resources of many means strength.

When you send us a check for a minimum of 30 Euro (for the States $ 30) annually, you will receive, four times per year,  an English translation of the latest copy of "Shamrock", the Foundation's newsletter (1 copy per address). In the "Shamrock" we will update you on the progress of existing research studies; report the final results of research studies completed; list imported male dogs; report on Foundation finances; advise you of overall foundation activities.
We also intend to publish personal Irish Wolfhound stories written by you.

Can the Gentle Giant, our beloved Irish Wolfhound, count on your support? The address for the check is:
Stichting de Ierse Wolfshond; Voorwillenseweg 149 A;  2806 ZG GOUDA, the Netherlands.

On behalf of the Irish Wolfhound we thank you in advance (and anticipation) for your support!

With kindest regards,
The Committee and fellow workers, Stichting de Ierse Wolfshond,
Trudy Zantingh
